Cat Quest ~ RIEview

As I’ve mentioned in previous reviews, I tend to avoid games that require a high level of hand-eye coordination. But you know, there’s a lot of good games out there that need this skill, take Final Fantasy and Genshin Impact for example. I was ready to give up and avoid staring at the beautiful graphics when the Cat Quest went on sale in the App Store. For a short period of time it was free, and I caved in and downloaded it. How was it, you may ask? Well, read on to find out!

Game Plot

The story begins in Felingard, set in the medieval age and where anthropomorphic cats exist. All is well and perfect until the dragons attack, of course. The only cat that can defeat the dragons – Dragonblood. But one day the Dragonblood disappeared, and the rest of the cats were left to defend themselves against the dragons. You play as the protagonist, who sets off to rescue his catnapped sister and subsequently discovers that he’s a Dragonblood! Together, you will embark on a journey to discover the truth behind the heritage of being a Dragonblood, and the sinister being that lurks behind the veil.

Verdict (4.5/5)

So far I’m loving the plot! I enjoy learning more about Felingard through the stories in the side quests, not so much about the main story as I’m too busy trying to level up instead of suicidally attempt much harder levels beyond my capability.

Character Diversity & Personality

While not much is known about the protagonist, the developers have done well to introduce Spirry, a sidekick and assistant to the protagonist. Spirry is also a guide that functions to provide assistance to us players, as we don’t know about Felingard or how things work in the game.

Verdict (4/5)

So far I love the characters, while some NPCs have minor and repetitive lines, others like Kit Cat and Spirry are pretty interesting. With the interactions players can have with the NPC, gradually players will be able to figure out what happened to Felingard post-disappearance of the Dragonbloods, and how the protagonist’s appearance will change things hereon.

Game & CG Art

Very cute and whimsical art. Lots of interesting cats as far as the eyes can see, lots of cute-looking but deadly enemies, and good use of bright colours to engage the player's interests.

Verdict (4.5/5)

While I find that the cats drawn in this game aren’t as cute as some other games, the graphics in this game are still top-notch quality!

Game Mechanics

As with most open world RPG, there are main and side quests. Players are given the freedom to complete the side quests anytime during the main quest, though it is important to note that all side quests require a certain player level before players can embark on said quest. Aside from battling enemies roaming through Felingard, there are caves marked with the required player level containing enemies and chests.

You can equip the protagonist with useful parts of armor and skills, which you can purchase (yes you can purchase skills!) and/or upgrade with coins. You can get coins by completing quests and defeating enemies. Need to take a break from the game? Head to the nearest town and take a nap. No, I’m not kidding. When the protagonist takes a nap, not only his health (i.e. HP) and mana (i.e. MP) recovers, and at the same time you are saving your game progress.

Verdict (4.5/5)

I was worried that I couldn’t pick it up easily, but with the tutorial I came to learn how easy the gameplay is. For someone that absolutely panic presses all available buttons in RPGs before Cat Quest, this game is like a breath of fresh air.

Cat Quest is a good game for all you RPG lovers out there. If you're an amateur to RPGs like me, this game is a good introduction to RPG. Personally I will be mastering my moves in Cat Quest before attempting the more high level RPGs.
