Delicious World ~ RIEview

Cooking games. When you think of cooking games, you think of actual, mixing ingredients together and then cooking them. Delicious World does that… sort of. It’s a simulation on testing your time management skills, because not only you’re the cook – you’re also the server/waitress AND cashier. That means you’ll be involved from the start of taking orders, to preparing the dish, finally serving said dish and collecting payment. But is Delicious World any good?

Game Plot

You play as Emily, our protagonist, who dreams to be the greatest chef that the world has ever seen. Her hard work gets paid off when she finally gets her once in a lifetime chance at the shot to stardom. Players will join Emily in travelling around the world in a wild chase for her dreams. Will she succeed?

Verdict (5/5)

Fun plot that is almost reminiscent of a romance comedy. Yes, there is a hint of romance here and there, but that doesn’t take away from the centric goal of seeing how Emily grows through her journey. This is one of the reasons why the developers have released a series titled ‘Delicious’, based on Emily at different stages of her life.

Ever need to reread a particular chapter? Check out the 'Story Diary', and you can do so without having to replay the scenes.

Character Diversity & Personality

Emily is a fantastic character, who has her dreams but is also realistic in a sense that things may not always happen as she wishes. Supporting characters not only help bring life to the plot; with their interactions with Emily both parties learnt to grow and become better versions of themselves. Also, seeing Emily and Patrick's interactions is hilarious, considering the other titles in the 'Delicious' series.

Verdict (5/5)

So far I’m loving the character lineup. Good characterisation and good writing is essentially in keeping players interested in the plot. Kudos to the writers for the good plot!

Game & CG Art

The art style and bright tones really reminds me of western cartoons. Think Disney cartoons, for instance. The colours aren’t too sharp, and the art gives off the hand-drawn feel as well. There’s no CG in the game but the background is equally swoon-worthy as a good CG.

Verdict (5/5)

Love, love, love the art style! Really wish there were CG for collection purposes, but then again we do have the option to screenshot the favourite scene in question.

Game Mechanics

While it is easy to pick up, the game tests your strategic and time-management skills. You will need to direct Emily in preparing customer’s orders, and delivering them within the time limit of 3 hearts. Customers will leave when they are absolutely heart-broken (yikes!), so it’s a race against time to make sure that scenario won’t happen.

After each play, you can watch an ad to double your earnings. To increase the coins earned, use coins (yes, you read that right) to upgrade! You can upgrade by using better quality ingredients (i.e. hence selling price will increase), upgrading cooking equipment (i.e. reducing time spent on cooking), and improving the store’s aesthetic (i.e. increasing customer’s patience/time it takes to break their hearts).

Verdict (3.5/5)

Great game, but same issue as SuperStar JYPNation – game crashes. I would begin the game, and just before I could tap anything it would crash. But the second time I enter the game again it would work fine for 1 play, then when it comes to the 2nd play the game crashes again and the cycle repeats. This means that at any one time I could only play the game once before forcefully removed from the game.

Due to its quality and gameplay, the game can leave a pretty huge dent on your device's battery life. Perhaps if the developers could give an option to reduce graphics or something, the gameplay should be more enjoyable.

In-Game Events

There are spontaneous events, which are often for a short period of time rather than a long campaign period like those in ShiWuYu that stretches for 2 weeks or so. It’s good to note also that these events encourage players to continue playing levels in the original game, rather than developing a side event with its event storyline – thus drawing player’s attention away from advancing in the main story levels.

Verdict (4.5/5)

There is a pretty good variety, and I do appreciate having events that give players additional incentive to advance in the game as well as keeping their interest afloat. It would be more enjoyable if there were zero game crashes, of course.

As someone who has played a few of GameHouse’s releases, Delicious World is one of their best titles for sure. Yes, there are some spoilers on who Emily ends up with in the other ‘Delicious’ titles, but other than that this is a game that fans of time-management/strategic games shouldn’t miss out. Of course, it would be for the best if the developers address the issue of the game crashes.
